The Big Timbers Museum displays artifacts as well as exhibits about the history and legacy that the High Plains of Eastern Colorado have. The exhibits include posters from World War I, pioneers, homesteaders, and the dust bowl.

The Big Timbers Museum is named after a large stand of cottonwood trees that grew along Arkansas River. The cottonwoods were located along the buffalo migration route and were greatly appreciated by pioneers, soldiers, traders, and Native Americans.

The building that houses the museum was once an AT&T facility. It housed repeater equipment used on AT&T’s Denver-Kansas City long-distance lines between 1929 and 1966. AT&T donated this building to the Prowers County Historical Society in 1966 after the equipment had been removed.

The museum is filled with memorabilia from past centuries. It has six cases containing artifacts from Sand Creek. These include arrowheads and bullets as well as fragments of cannonballs and campsite artifacts. Bright colors and patriotic messages attract the eye to large framed World War I posters.

The Fleagle Bank Robbery exhibit documents the first use of one fingerprint by the FBI to prosecute an FBI case. One of the exhibits at the museum features a wedding dress from the House of Worth. This house is known for its pioneering work in haute couture. Big Timbers Museum’s music area features a pipe organ, small pump organ, and a piano from the Lamar Elks Lodge. Also, there is a Seeburg jukebox called the “Trash Can” model. Other exhibits include artifacts from Native American and Western cultures.

The adjacent building houses Big Timbers Transportation Museum. It opened in 2011, and includes antique wagons, cars and trucks as well as artifacts from Big Timbers Museum.
