Prowers County is the largest county on the Great High Prairie. It was established in 1889. The name Prowers County is a tribute to John W. Prowers who was an early rancher in this area. The county seat and largest city is Lamar, Colorado.

Flood And Great Depression

The county was devastated by a major flood in June 1921, followed by the Great Depression of 1930s and the Dust Bowl. The number of farms reporting crop loss soared from 178 farms in 1929 to 1,133 by 1934. Between 1930 and 1940, over 2,400 people fled the county, looking for a fresh start elsewhere, because banks and farms failed.

Many federal relief programs from the Great Depression era are associated with Willow Creek Park, in Lamar. The park was built between 1933 and 1938 by the Civil Works Administration, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and the Works Progress Administration. It provided employment for Lamar during the depression. Willow Creek Park, Colorado’s first CWA-funded project, was the first planned park in Lamar. It offers a place for both active and passive recreation.

Post World War II

The county’s economy was revived after World War II when the demand for agricultural products helped to bring it back to life. All crops in the county were worth more than $1 million in 1940, then reached $5.3 million in 1945. The county saw a record 14,836 population in 1950.

In the decades that followed World War II, innovations in agriculture included machinery and chemicals that enabled for higher yields. Combine equipment, pesticides and fertilizers were all new innovations that allowed for bigger farms, but also encouraged consolidation of farmland by those with the means to do so. Prowers County is an example of this trend. Between 1950 and 1970, the number and average size of farms decreased from 1,126 to 669.
