Issac Holmes founded Lamar on May 24, 1886. It was named after Lucius Lamar. Lamar was Secretary of the Interior at the time. However, he had previously written the Mississippi Ordinance of Secession and served the Confederacy both as an officer, diplomat, and officer. C. M. Morrison was elected the first mayor of the town. One of the 12 Madonna of the Trail monuments in Lamar honors the spirit of pioneer women of the United States. The National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) commissioned the monuments. The monuments were placed in each of 12 states along the National Old Trails Road that ran from Cumberland (Maryland) to Upland (California). The Madonna of the Trail monuments, which were created by August Leimbach and paid for by contributions, are a symbol of the strength and faith of the women who helped to conquer the wilderness and establish permanent homes. The twelve statues were dedicated in 1928 and 1929. They have become a source of pride for the community. All twelve statues are now in good condition and displayed thanks to the tireless efforts of both local and national groups.
