About Lamar CO
Issac Holmes founded Lamar on May 24, 1886. It was named after Lucius Lamar. Lamar was Secretary of the Interior at the time. However, he had previously written the Mississippi Ordinance of Secession and served the Confederacy both as an officer, diplomat, and as an officer. C. M. Morrison was elected the first mayor of the town. Prowers County was created in 1889 and Lamar was elected as the county’s representative. Lamar has been a victim of floods and fires throughout its history. Lamar was also heavily affected by the Dust Bowl and participated in projects managed by the Civil Works Administration and Federal Emergency Relief Administration.
Lamar is the commercial center of a large farming and ranching area. It is also known for its historic and natural resources, such as the Arkansas River, its historic Downtown, and its location on Santa Fe Trail. It is also close to historical sites like the Sand Creek Massacre site and Bent’s Old Fort. Lamar is home to over 400 bird species. Lamar is the only Monarch City USA in Colorado, where Monarch butterflies are plentiful.
The city is located in southeastern Colorado, northwestern Prowers County. It is on the south bank of the Arkansas River floodplain. Las Animas lies approximately twenty miles to its west. The total area of the city is 4.2 miles (11 km2) according to the United States Census Bureau.
One of the 12 Madonna of the Trail monuments in the U.S. is located in Lamar honoring the spirit of pioneer women of the United States. The National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) commissioned the monuments. The monuments were placed in each of 12 states along the National Old Trails Road that ran from Cumberland (Maryland) to Upland (California). The Madonna of the Trail monuments, which were created by August Leimbach and paid for by contributions, are a symbol of the strength and faith of the women who helped to conquer the wilderness and establish permanent homes. The twelve statues were dedicated in 1928 and 1929. They have become a source of pride for the community. All twelve statues are now in good condition and displayed thanks to the tireless efforts of both local and national groups.
